Nutrition is a treatment.
Through consultations we, registered nutritionists, see changes such as a net improvement of blood cholesterol, of blood pressure, improved energy level, less irritability, better concentration, fewer digestive problems, a better relationship with food, diabetes control, reverse fatty livers, etc.. And also of course all the positive effects of substantial weight loss. So finally, something less obvious to assess : nutrition has long-term effects such as decreased risk of cancer for example and prevention in general.
Did you know that ?
1) Up to 35% of all cancers can be prevented by being active, eating well and maintaining a healthy weight..According to the Canadian society of cancer. Dec 2009.
2) A healthy diet is one of the best weapons you have to fight cardiovascular disease. The food you eat (and the amount) can affect other controllable risk factors: cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes and overweight. According to the American Heart Association Nov. 2010
3) People who have excess body fat — especially if a lot of it is at the waist — are more likely to develop heart disease and stroke even if they have no other risk factors. According to the American Heart Association Nov. 2010
4) Adopting a healthy lifestyle is a critical part of preventing or delaying the onset of diabetes and, for those already diagnosed with the disease, keeping it under control. According to the American Heart Association Nov. 2010
5) Hypertension is alone responsible for nearly half of cardiovascular disease worldwide, cholesterol is responsible for almost a third. The sedentary lifestyles, smoking and diet justify 20% each. According to the Report on World Health 2002 WHO.
6) Regarding high cholesterol levels: the basic approach is of course to change one’s lifestyle habits and in particular one’s diet. According to a report published by the Montreal Health Department in collaboration with the Association des medecins omnipracticiens de Montreal under the program ‘Prevention in medical practice’
7) For patients with a high risk, it is suggested that they begin a medication treatment immediately and recommend at the same time essential lifestyle habit changes. For patients with a moderate to low risk, it is recommended that they change their lifestyle habits for at least three to six months before considering the use of medication.According to a report published by the Montreal Health Department in collaboration with the Association des medecins omnipracticiens de Montreal under the program ‘Prevention in medical practice’
8) You need to have realistic objectives and not expect a weight loss of more than 5 to 10% in the first six months of the treatment. A weight loss of 5% would be significant and would bring about beneficial changes in blood pressure and blood lipoproteins.According to a report published by the Montreal Health Department in collaboration with the Association des medecins omnipracticiens de Montreal under the program ‘Prevention in medical practice’
